Become a Senior Engineer 1, Distribution Engineering Automation & Power Quality/Electric Magnetic Fields at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this role, you will lead process excellence coordination across Distribution Engineering Automation’s Hardware, Software, Power Quality/Electric Magnetic Fields, and Field Support teams. You will help strengthen operational consistency, improve workflow visibility, standardize cross-functional processes, and support data-driven decision-making across key engineering and field support functions.

 

As a Senior Engineer 1, Distribution Engineering Automation & Power Quality/Electric Magnetic Fields your work will help advance the safety, reliability, efficiency, and effectiveness of automation-related programs that support the electric grid. You will partner with technical leads, engineers, field personnel, business partners, and leadership to identify improvement opportunities, coordinate process enhancements, develop performance insights, and support execution of initiatives that improve service delivery and operational outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees engineers performing diagnostics, monitoring and inspecting equipment, and reviewing grid technologies, building relationships to facilitate cross-functional knowledge transfer of related work groups.
  • Leads the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and other documentation to communicate project status, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Collaborates and leads with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless development, integration and implementation of future technologies and asset performance management strategies.
  • Assists in a variety of engineering and business initiatives and grid strategies, including development of innovative procedures and design recommendations.
  • Provides support for new equipment installation and startup, then leads the hand over processes to the ramp and sustaining phases.
  • Leads junior engineers in investigation of threats on the distribution system infrastructure based on observations and findings.
  • Gathers and correlates basic data using engineering studies and procedures, which may include routine and diagnostic testing of components and systems.
  • Facilitates training and professional development opportunities for engineering team members to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Bachelor's Degree in a scientific/technical/math field.
  • Seven or more years of experience in engineering within operations, production, construction or maintenance environments.
  • Possess a valid Class C Driver's License.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience in electric utility distribution, grid operations, automation, power quality, engineering, field support, or other infrastructure-focused environments.
  • Demonstrated success driving operational excellence through process improvement, Lean, Kaizen, SPC, continuous improvement, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong knowledge of distribution engineering, grid automation, protection and control systems, communications, utility operations, and associated technologies such as ADMS, OMS, DMS/SCADA, EMS, CYME, and work management platforms.
  • Proficiency in data analytics, visualization, and reporting tools, including Power BI, Excel, SharePoint, Tableau, SQL, Python, and enterprise data platforms.
  • Experience developing, deploying, and supporting end-to-end analytics applications, dashboards, performance metrics, and data-driven solutions using large, complex, or time-series datasets.
  • Ability to transform technical, analytical, and operational data into actionable insights, executive-level recommendations, and decision-support tools that deliver measurable business value.
  • Experience supporting compliance, audit readiness, regulatory requirements, risk management, and analytics initiatives within regulated or operationally critical environments.
  • Proven project management and stakeholder engagement skills, including planning, execution, issue resolution, risk mitigation, and alignment across engineering, operations, technology, vendor, and leadership teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence outcomes, foster accountability, and drive results across organizations without direct authority.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and mentoring skills, with the ability to effectively engage and develop both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and collaboration technologies.

 

Additional Information 

 

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.  Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

  • The primary work location for this position is Santa Ana. However, the successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time at (alternate work location).
  • Position will require up to 20% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory. 
  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position – Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation.  Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.Relocation does not apply to this position.
