BUILDING THE FOUNDATION TO OUR FUTURE.

MEET GARRETT MCCOY – FIELD PLANNING TECHNICIAN

Meet Garrett, one of our Field Planning Technicians. He started his career as a Field Planning Technician Trainee at SCE after working as a “Fielder” at a local contracting company. After joining SCE as a full-time employee, Garrett completed a paid training program with a combination of classroom and hands-on training in the field. Garrett shares, “The Field Planning Tech Program trains you from the ground up to be successful in your role. The course also fits the needs of individuals who may not have experience in the utility industry as well.”

Garrett’s typical day as a Field Planning Technician includes going out to the field and collecting light pole loading data including what is located on poles, measurements, and wire sizes. There are also days when he’s in the office when he’s focused on calculating pole data on the system database and preparing it for Planners. The role of the Field Planning Technician also requires a lot of collaboration and teamwork. Garrett has an opportunity to leverage his passion for interacting with people like customers and other employees in his job. Safety is also a key priority of his role, whether that’s participating in morning group stretches, preparing his PPE gear, or practicing safety behaviors to keep his customers and himself safe.

The decision to apply and join SCE is one of Garrett’s proudest moments. Working for a company like SCE has always been his dream.

He is inspired by his projects because his work is designed to help communities stay safe and recognizes the company is committed to a clean energy future. He shares, “Fires are a huge concern in California, and contributing to a team that prevents disasters leaves me with a sense of great accomplishment and satisfaction. I also feel proud that Edison is leading clean energy initiatives, doing their part to modernize California’s energy grid and building the infrastructure for transportation electrification.”

What are your favorite perks of working as a Field Planning Technician at SCE?
One of the biggest perks is working inside and outside of the office. Being outside and exploring new places you may have never been because of work is a great opportunity. On the other hand, it’s nice to come into the office and bond and feel a sense of camaraderie with team while finishing your projects. It has a great mixture of indoor and outdoor work to always keep things fresh.

How do you feel you are helping in supporting Edison’s clean energy future?
Many of the jobs require us to prevent fires in high fire zones. Fires are a huge concern in California and contributing to a team that prevents disasters, leaves me with a sense of great accomplishment and satisfaction. Clean energy is a goal we should strive for and I am happy that SCE is leading the initiative, doing their part to modernize California’s energy grid and building the infrastructure for transportation and electrification.
