MEET THE INNOVATIVE WOMEN OF EDISON.
MEET SCARLETT CARILLO, POWER SYSTEMS ENGINEER
Scarlett Carrillo is a Power System Engineer for the Power System Controls – Advanced Applications team at Southern California Edison (SCE). She is the technical lead for the Energy Management System (EMS) refresh project, which is upgrading SCE’s main control system with a focus on power system applications. This includes design, implementation, testing and deployment phases of the new system by working with vendors, as well as clients to deliver a high quality upgraded system. She leads her team to interface and collaborate with clients to develop solutions while facilitating cooperation across multiple departments. Her primary responsibility is to ensure the reliability of EMS applications to meet Key Performance Indicator standards which directly impact SCE’s real time grid operations.
Scarlett is a rising star who began her career at SCE in 2012 with a year-round internship as a Power System Professional Trainee where she used different engineering software such as PSLF and CAPE to perform short circuit analysis to build test cases and analyze power system data. She was offered a full-time position in 2013 as a Power System Engineer in the IT department, where she was responsible for expanding and maintaining the power system electrical network model to support large-scale EMS and Dispatcher/Operator Training Simulator Applications.
She currently maintains, enhances, configures, and customizes power system applications to better assist SCE’s Grid Control Center dispatchers and Operations Engineers to make informed decisions while operating the electrical grid. Scarlett has successfully led a team on several innovative projects that include power system network modeling for more than 750 substations as well as testing and verification of critical Power System Applications such as the State Estimation (SE), Real Time Contingency Analysis (RTCA), and Network Status Processor (NSP). She is a self-motivated, driven individual with a passion for continuous improvement. Over the past 5 years, she has grown as an individual that has been able to overcome challenges and get through obstacles with the support of her team and management. She is also involved in several SCE recruitment activities. She has been a career fair panelist for many different universities and enjoys volunteering her time as a motivational speaker for students at these events. Scarlett holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles.
How has SCE helped supported you through your career?
SCE has supported me through my career by helping me reach my goal of obtaining a master’s degree and funding a portion of my tuition through the education reimbursement program. SCE continues to support me through collaboration with my mentors that have made a difference in my life. I have gained so much knowledge and have had the opportunity to be exposed to several different projects which has helped me grow as an individual contributor, team player and leader.
What do you like most about your team at SCE?
My team at SCE has taken me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to face challenges and succeed even when I thought I couldn’t handle it. In our team, we respect one another and have the flexibility in our schedules as well as have the support from other members during stressful and difficult times. The thing that I enjoy the most about my team is the feeling of being part of a family, not just an employee.
