Become a Senior Distribution Technical Studies Engineer- Microgrids & EMT Modeling in the Distribution Technical Studies team at Southern California Edison (SCE) and help shape the future of grid reliability and clean energy. In this role, you’ll serve as a technical lead, guiding engineers in advanced technical studies for front-of-meter microgrids, including those developed under the Microgrid Incentive Program (MIP) and the Multi Property Microgrid tariff. You’ll tackle complex interconnection projects in electrically weak systems, such as Catalina Island, where innovative solutions and electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis are critical to success. You’ll also support other technical studies as needed to address emerging challenges. Your expertise will inform SCE’s strategy, regulatory direction, and technology adoption, helping to power our planet, reduce carbon emissions, and create cleaner air for everyone. Responsibilities
- Oversees engineers performing diagnostics, monitoring and inspecting equipment, and reviewing grid technologies, building relationships to facilitate cross-functional knowledge transfer of related work groups
- Leads the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and other documentation to communicate project status, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders
- Collaborate and lead with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless development, integration and implementation of future technologies and asset performance management strategies
- Assists in a variety of engineering and business initiatives and grid strategies, including development of innovative procedures and design recommendations
- Provides support for new equipment installation and startup, then leads the hand over processes to the ramp and sustaining phases
- Leads junior engineers in investigation of threats on the distribution system infrastructure based on observations and findings
- Gathers and correlates basic data using engineering studies and procedures, which may include routine and diagnostic testing of components and systems
- Facilitates training and professional development opportunities for engineering team members to enhance their skills and knowledge
- A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific/technical/math field.
- Seven or more years of experience performing engineering work in operations, production, construction or maintenance environments.
- Possess a valid Class C Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Experience with Power system distribution or transmission analysis tools (e.g., PSCAD, CYME, CAPE).
- Experience in Electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling, validation and performing advanced engineering studies for distributed energy resources (DER) interconnection and microgrid projects.
- Knowledge of technical aspects of microgrid analysis, control and protection systems.
- Knowledge of utility generation interconnection requirements and standards (eg. IEEE 1547)
- Understanding of standard communication protocols such as DNP3, IEEE 2030.5 for DERs
- Professional Engineer (PE) License
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and deliver technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences, including external stakeholders.
Additional Information
- This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

- Position will require up to 10% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.

Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
