Become a Protection Automation Engineer 1 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this entry level engineer role, you will work with the Senior Protection Automation Engineer in the Protection Engineering department of SCE’s Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Organizational Unit. Through innovation, you will provide automation engineering expertise to support key SCE stakeholders on capital projects and advance automation solutions in the daily operations/maintenance of the grid.
Primary Functions:
- Assist with Ethernet Programmable Automation Controller (ePAC), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Momentum PLC, Optimum panel, and Bridge configuration, and QA review of Automation Drawings
- Support issuing Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) / PLC point-lists, ePAC, Optimum panel and battery charger configurations.
- Contribute to Substation Engineering Modeling Tool (SEMT) / Human Machine Interface (HMI) point list development for Substation Automation designs and RTU / ePAC stations
- Print review for automation equipment, configuration, and QA of SEMT / HMI / PLC files.
- Provide support to Substation Construction & Maintenance (SC&M) to facilitate problem resolutions.
- Support major capital program type projects (e.g. Distribution/Transmission System Planning, Substation Infrastructure Replacement, etc.) that involve SEMT with substation HMI.
- Interact with the T&D Innovation group on advanced Automation efforts.
- Collaborate closely with the Control and Meter Asset Engineering Strategy organization for Automation Strategy, Substation Projects, and SC&M Test & Technology organizations in the execution of Automation projects.
- Providing technical support to SC&M and any other organizations associated with Automation Engineering execution tasks.
Secondary Functions (on as-needed basis when feasible):
- Represent team and participate in the Quarterly Automation Strategy Forum Discussions
- Understudy and support Senior Automation Engineer with IEC 61850 HMI, fully Digital Substation, etc.

Responsibilities
- Prepares technical engineering evaluations and supports the inspections of equipment and operations
- Assists in the review and applications of new technologies to improve quality of service to customers
- Maintains records and documentation on relevant engineering procedures and preventative/ demand maintenance
- Assists with engineering projects using existing procedures to investigate, evaluate and assist in producing technically correct and cost-effective designs and solutions
- Supports the document lifecycle within assigned projects according to defined organizational processes
- Provides operational support to improve customer satisfaction and reliability performance; monitors the trending of electrical system health
- Assists with Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Apparent Cause Analysis (ACA), and miscellaneous investigations to troubleshoot problems, making changes to correct them
- Observes all safety policies during the execution of required tasks and ensures safety standards are met and safe working practices are adhered to
- A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific/technical/math field, or expected graduation with such a degree within the next six months.
- Possess a valid Class C Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of digital logic design principles (e.g. logic gates, latches, etc.)
- Knowledge of transmission system operation (e.g. line-and-bus arrangements, reclosing practices, etc.)
- Familiarity with Substation Automation design and Human Machine Interface (HMI)
- Knowledge of System One-Line Diagram, point-lists, and AC/DC Schematics
- Familiarity with use of IEC 61850 GOOSE communications
- Knowledge of Telecommunications (e.g. system redundancy, fiber, microwave, Ethernet, TDM, MPLS, etc.)
- Experience with automation related test procedures
Additional Information
- This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.
